Chinese
astrology is different than western astrology. Instead of being named after the
stars, Chinese astrological signs are named after animals. Also,
your sign does not depend on the month of your birth, but the
year.
The beginning of Chinese astrology is unclear. There are many
different stories about how it was created. Here is one of the
stories:
The Jade Emperor held a race to decide which were the fastest
animals. He said that the first 12 animals to cross the finish
line, which was just beyond a river, would be chosen to represent
the Chinese astrological signs. Since neither the rat nor the cat
could swim, the ox agreed to carry the two of them across the
river. The rat jumped off the oxs back at the last moment
and was the first to cross the finish line. The ox placed second,
right behind. No one seems to know what happened to the cat, who
didn't place at all!
And so, in Chinese astrology, the Rat is the first sign, the Ox
is the second, and so on. There are 12 animals altogether, each
with certain characteristics. It is said that if you were born in
a particular year, you will have those characteristics. It is
also believed that each animal relates in a particular way to the
other animals in the Chinese zodiac.
